Pain in a relationship is not an indication of how good a relationship is (as in, “I can't believe how much I love this person; I want them so much it hurts”). But rather how much is wrong with the relationship. Pain is telling us when it is time to move away; to pull our hand out of the flame. The problem is that too many of us come to worship the pain, believing that it is the pain that makes the relationship real.
And usually for too long we don't realize that it really is pain that we're feeling, and not some other emotion instead.
